Our
Story

AFIRD was founded in 1997 by a group of professionals who realized the need for an integrated approach to rural development and brought their experiences together to develop the country. It was registered as an NGO in 1998 under registration No: S-5914/2404 and Certificate No: 2222. It is authorized to operate in all parts of Uganda.

AFIRD envisage a society free from hunger and diseases living in a peaceful and green environment and with a Mission to empower smallholder farming communities for income, food and nutrition security through sustainable faming systems and contributing towards organic agricultural and environment policy development and implementation in Uganda.

Farmer-led Development Program

The Farmer-led Development Programme (FDP) focuses on sustainable agricultural practices, market access and livelihood improvement in Uganda.

AFIRD promotes sustainabagriculture to address malnutrition and income challenges, targeting smallholder farmers.

Interventions include capacity building, sustainable farming techniques and ICT-based extension services......

Youth Empowerment
Program

The Youth Empowerment Programme (YEP) aims to promote agriculture as a viable livelihood option for youth.

AFIRD equips young people with organic farming skills through various projects supported by different organisations using permaculture principles, sustainable farming practices and partnerships with schools, farmer groups, prisons and refugees....

Advocacy and Lobbying Program

The Advocacy and Lobbying Programme (ALP) aims to influence agricultural policies in favour of smallholder farmers through community collaboration.

AFIRD addresses issues such as access to food, land rights and sustainable agriculture through strategies such as networking, evidence-based advocacy, capacity building and the use of ICTs, targeting smallholder farming institutions, schools, prisons and local government.....
